All About Sciatica

The term sciatica derives from the sciatic nerve, which runs down the back of the leg from the buttock. If your spine is out of alignment, it causes pressure on the nerve and the nerve becomes irritated and inflamed. The classic symptom is acute lower back pain that runs down the back of one or both legs. Some people have minimal back pain while others have very severe back pain. You may have numbness and tingling in the affected leg(s). You may also notice the decreased feeling in the sole of the foot or in the calf. Sciatica can make your legs feel weak and decrease your mobility.

What Causes Sciatica?

The pain of sciatica results from nerve root irritation, but the condition has a number of possible causes. A misalignment of vertebrae in the lower back is often the trigger. Degenerative disc disease, narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis) and pregnancy can result in sciatic pain. Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one vertebra slips over another vertebra; it can cause sciatic pain. Other factors that may contribute to sciatic pain or make it worse include obesity, a sedentary lifestyle or sleeping on a mattress that is too soft. Wearing high heels constantly tips the pelvis forward and throws the back out of alignment, resulting in sciatic pain.

Sciatica Treatment

Since sciatic pain nearly always involves a spinal misalignment, an adjustment is often the first procedure a chiropractor uses to treat the pain. There are various methods of adjustment, but they basically fall into manual adjustments with the hands or an adjustment with a hand-held tool. Massage can help relieve the tension in muscles that cause spasm. Corrective exercises help you strengthen the core muscles that support the back. You chiropractor will probably also recommend a regular walking program and may suggest dietary changes to decrease inflammatory foods. Supplements also promote better nutrition and can help with problems like sleep disruption.
